My Sicilian grandfather left his small town, young wife and two kids to work in Belgium as a miner. An explosion in the mine left him injured but alive, and that was his wake up call to uproot his family and immigrate to Canada in the 50s. That was my mom's immigrant story, at least the beginning of it. My father's was a little more tumultuous but involved leaving home at 10 years old and riding a stolen bike from Naples to Germany, eventually ending up in Canada where he met my mom. They were both entrepreneurs in Canada and you could say that I lived a rag to "riches" American dream, having witnessed first had what you can do as an entrepreneur when you decide to succeed.
