Jack Newman co-founded Amyris with four post-docs and their professor at the University of California, Berkeley in 2003. Dr. Newman is an inventor of the original patented technology underpinning the Amyris production platform, work that led to a grant he co-authored and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to produce a cure for malaria using synthetic biology. At Amyris, Dr. Newman has lead a research group of over 100 scientists and engineers and currently focuses on innovation in microbial engineering. He has over two decades of research experience in molecular biology, microbial physiology and genetics. He received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a B.A. in molecular and cellular biology from the University of California, Berkeley.
