Jan van Santen spun off Biospeech in 2004 from his research group at the Oregon Health & Science University. A Dutch emigrant who received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1979, Jan was recruited by the prestigious East Coast think tank, Bell Labs, where he built up an international reputation in speech and language technologies. After 15 years at Bell Labs, Jan wanted to apply this knowledge to help people with speech or hearing challenges. In 2000, he joined OHSU as the director of the Center for Spoken Language Understanding to conduct basic research on speech and hearing, but he had another goal: translate his research into products that people could actually use. And Biospeech was born.
