Karl Hofbauer has extensive experience in the areas of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease. As a previous industry executive, he has an impressive track record in directing large global R&D efforts. He was appointed Professor for Applied Pharmacology at the University of Basel, where he is pursuing his research interests in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors. A physician by training, Professor Hofbauer specialized in experimental pharmacology early in his career. Subsequently he held several research management positions in the pharmaceutical industry. From 1996-2000 he was Therapeutic Area Head for Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases at Novartis, where he headed a global drug discovery team of over 200 scientists. Prior to this he was Head of Cardiovascular Biology at Ciba.
