Polan received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Connecticut College, a PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and an MD from Yale University School of Medicine and her Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. Polan remained at Yale New Haven Hospital for her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed by a Reproductive Endocrine Fellowship. Polan was on the faculty at Yale University until 1990, when she joined Stanford University. She was a Professor and Chair of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1990 to 2005 and is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University School of Medicine. Polan is a reproductive endocrinologist, with more than 130 articles and books, and has served on committees at the Institute of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
