About
MCI Communications was the second-largest long-distance telecommunications service provider in the U.S. until its purchase by WorldCom. MCI was founded in 1963 and operated microwave relay stations and provided two-way radio services to truck drivers and barges. The company grew with a strategy of mergers and acquisitions, and by going public with large amounts of capital being available at its disposal. By 1990, MCI was the second-largest telecommunications company in the U.S. The company ran into difficulty as a result of U.S. regulatory laws and in 1997 the company was purchased by WorldCom in a deal worth US$ 34.7 million.
