Russian Railways handles 39% of all freight movements including pipelines and over 43.2% of all passenger journeys in Russia. The company’s primary goal is to meet the state’s rail transport and employment needs, and to provide services to passengers. It seeks to effectively develop a transportation business that is able to compete in the Russian and international markets while respecting its responsibility as a national carrier and rail infrastructure owner. Russian Railways was established by Decree No. 585 of the Russian Government on September 18, 2003. It began operations on October 1, 2003.
