Steven Powles is a criminal law barrister who is a member of Doughty Street chambers, with a specialisation in international criminal law and extradition. Powles is based between the Hague and London and has worked extensively representing clients before the International Criminal Court (ICC) specifically in matters related to human rights and the perpetration of war crimes. Powles has been very involved in proceedings related to the ICC Special Court for Sierra Leone where he represented former Liberian President and war lord Charles Taylor in a new appeal based on new evidence before the Special Court for Sierra Leone. Taylor had an Interpol red notice issued against him for crimes against humanity in 2003, and was arrested and rearrested in 2006, after briefly escaping custody in Nigeria.
